Coppicing - Can our oldest form of woodland management bring our woodlands back to life?

I enjoyed this short film from the Wood For The Trees series on Youtube. It’s England-focussed but the arguments and observations would equally apply to Scotland. Oh I wish we could grow Sweet Chestnut coppice like that up here though!

Good video. Very envious of the Sweet Chestnut, such a versatile & durable timber. Hoping to try some experimental coppicing of Sycamore (on right of track). Probably for fire-wood. Sycamore turns really well, has a lovely almost metallic grain at times. Used for food utensils I’m told because it doesn’t taint.

Lovely, yeah I’m very jealous of the sweet chestnut too! Trying a bit on our croft. Sycamore should coppice well and grows back pretty fast too. We’ve not got much here but I’d actually like to plant more of it.
