Crofting for Land Justice, 18 May

The Scottish Crofting Federation and Landworkers’ Alliance are joining forces to explore how expanding crofting beyond the Highlands and Islands—and creating new crofts across Scotland—can open up opportunities for new entrants into land work and become a powerful pathway to land justice

Held in Perthshire—an area scarred by the Clearances, yet excluded from the crofting system—the event will uncover the radical roots of crofting, born from historical resistance, and ask how this legacy can guide us today. It will examine why crofting remains confined to certain regions, and how a campaign to expand crofting into other areas could open doors for new entrants and support thriving local food systems.

Attendees will hear from new entrant farmers, land justice campaigners, croft creation projects, and those working at the grassroots to reshape land access in Scotland. They will discuss the barriers to accessing crofts, how we can incentivise croft creation, and how expanding crofting could support a new generation of land workers. Drawing inspiration from rebellious crofters of the past, they will plan how we can take action for land justice and expand crofting in modern Scotland.

The evening will end with a meal of delicious local food and a House Ceilidh of songs, stories and poetry, brought to us by Scottish Histories of Resistance.

Whether you’re a new entrant, aspiring landworker, community organiser, or simply passionate about land justice in Scotland—this event is for you.
