Wych elm coppice?

Hi, I wondered whether anyone has any experience of coppicing wych elm?

There is a fair bit of elm in my area in the Highlands and I wondered whether there would be any benefit in including some elm to increase diversity in a mixed firewood coppice that I plan to establish.

Thanks

Hi Carolyn. I’ve not coppiced any yet but I am underplanting wych elm into my mixed firewood coppice too on the first cut (currently mostly alder and birch). Hoping to diversify it a bit. I doubt the wych elm will be as big on the 10-12 year rotation though so not planting a huge number of them.

Thank you Al, I think I’ll give it a go too

Hi Al,

Are you coppicing Birch? I didn’t think it took to coppicing which is why we’ve not tried it.

I will give a wych elm or two a try.

Hi Steve! Yes the birch here has coppiced well. Some is now 3 years on and looking good. There’s also an incredible amount of birch regen all over. Pretty sure I’ll need to think it at some point! Pop over for a look some time.
