Coppice Case Study Project

:loudspeaker: We’re very excited to announce our new Coppice Case Studies project, which aims to map out existing coppice across Scotland over the next few years by writing and sharing case studies of coppice woodlands and projects. The project is run by the Scottish Coppice Network group as part of Reforesting Scotland.

About the project

Each case study will cover a different coppice across Scotland, finding out how their woodland is managed, species, rotations, lessons learned etc.

The overall aim of the project is to:

:world_map: Map out actively managed coppice woodlands across Scotland
:axe: Highlght the diversity of coppice that we have here already
:deciduous_tree: Help to provide examples for those looking to create coppice
:speech_balloon: Learn, share and inspire!

How to get involved

If you’re interested in creating a case study for your own woodland, or know of others we should reach out to, then get in touch with us at heartwood@reforestingscotland.org. We’ll send you a copy of our case study questionaire template which you can complete yourself, or we can complete it together over a video call. Once we have this and some photos we’ll edit it into a case study and publish it online.

The definition of coppice is wide open to all forms, including traditional and modern interpretations and uses. Types of projects we’d be interested to hear from include:

:wood: Privately owned woodland with coppice areas under management
:woman_farmer: Farms and crofts that use coppice management for their woodlands, including agroforestry
:axe: Coppice can either be for products for sale, or for the owner’s own use
:deciduous_tree: Community woodlands that use coppicing and/or make coppice products
:leafless_tree: Overstood or neglected coppice where there is scope for restarting the coppice

The Case Studies

Each case study will be added to the Hub, as well as the Scottish Coppice Network page. But they’re also linked below… Each case study includes contact details should you wish to visit the woodland. If you have questions or comments, it’d be great to ask them on the Hub so that we can all benefit from the answers.
